What’s Actually Happening in an Anxious Child’s Nervous System
The autonomic nervous system, which controls all the involuntary functions in the body, operates on a spectrum between two primary states. The sympathetic state handles threat response: fight, flight, freeze. The parasympathetic state handles rest, recovery, digestion, and social connection.
A well-regulated nervous system moves fluidly between these states depending on what the situation actually calls for. Something genuinely threatening activates the sympathetic response. Once the threat passes, the parasympathetic state kicks back in and the body settles.
In anxious kids, this transition isn’t happening efficiently. The sympathetic state activates easily and stays activated longer than it should. Small stressors, a loud noise, a change in plans, an unfamiliar social situation, trigger a full stress response that the nervous system then has difficulty winding down from. The child isn’t overreacting. Their nervous system is.
There’s a third state worth knowing about, identified through the work of researcher Stephen Porges and his Polyvagal Theory. When the nervous system perceives a threat as overwhelming and inescapable, it can drop into a shutdown or freeze state. This looks less like classic anxiety and more like withdrawal, flatness, or disconnection. Some kids cycle between the activated anxious state and this shutdown state, which is why anxiety and emotional shutdown can look like two different problems in the same child when they’re actually two expressions of the same dysregulated nervous system.

The head and neck are the lead point of exit, and depending on the length of labor, the baby’s position, and whether any interventions were used, the upper neck can come out of the experience carrying tension patterns that don’t resolve on their own.
Birth factors that commonly contribute to upper cervical tension include:
- Long or stalled labor
- Rapid delivery
- C-section, which involves a specific pulling force on the baby’s neck and head
- Vacuum or forceps assistance
- Posterior positioning (sunny side up)
- Nuchal cord (cord wrapped around the neck)
That early tension in the upper cervical spine can affect vagal tone and nervous system regulation from the very beginning of a child’s life. It doesn’t always show up immediately as something obvious. Sometimes it shows up years later as a child who seems to have a shorter fuse than their siblings, who has always been more sensitive, who has always had a harder time settling, and nobody could ever quite explain why.

What About Kids With ADHD and Sensory Processing Differences?
Anxiety rarely shows up alone in kids. It’s frequently accompanied by ADHD, sensory processing differences, or both. And the nervous system connection runs through all of them.
ADHD, at its neurological core, involves differences in how the prefrontal cortex regulates attention, impulse control, and emotional response. The prefrontal cortex is heavily dependent on the quality of input it receives from the nervous system as a whole. When the nervous system is dysregulated and running in chronic sympathetic overdrive, the prefrontal cortex has less access to the regulatory resources it needs. Focus becomes harder. Emotional regulation becomes harder. Impulse control becomes harder.
Sensory processing differences work similarly. The nervous system is taking in sensory input and either over-responding to it (hypersensitivity) or under-responding to it (hyposensitivity). Both patterns reflect a nervous system that isn’t efficiently filtering and organizing the information coming in from the environment. When nervous system regulation improves, sensory processing tends to become more efficient as well.
This is why parents of kids with ADHD and sensory differences often notice changes in focus, emotional regulation, and sensory tolerance as their child progresses through chiropractic care.
